Thinking about moving out of Georgia? Whether you’re relocating to be closer to family, downsizing to a smaller home, or looking for a community that better fits your lifestyle, one important question is: How do I find a good real estate agent in another state?
It’s a great question. After all, you’re not just hiring someone to handle paperwork. You’re trusting them with a huge financial and emotional transition. You want someone who truly understands your needs, not just someone who happens to pop up in a Google search.
If you're moving to a location where you know someone, ask them if they have a real estate agent that they think is marvelous. Personal referrals from someone you trust is where most of us want to start.
But if there's no one to ask, or if you ask and they have a bad experience, then that's where I come in.
During my time in corporate America, I became an expert in behavioral interviewing, asking interview questions that solicit specific answers to real work challenges to see how the interviewee actually met with obstacles.. When I screen agents in other states for my clients, I don’t just pick the first person who answers the phone. I ask questions like:
“Tell me about a time you helped someone buy from out of state. What were some of the challenges, and how did you handle them?”
The idea is simple: the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. So, if an agent has already successfully helped clients in situations similar to yours, it’s a good sign they’ll handle your move smoothly, too.
Once I’ve vetted several agents, I will send you the list of my top picks. You get to interview them and decide who feels like the best fit. You choose what's best for you.
And good news! When you work with an out-of-state agent that I refer you to, there’s no additional cost to you. If you decide to hire that agent and close on a house, their brokerage sends a referral fee to my brokerage. It’s simply how agents share business across locations to make sure clients are taken care of where ever they may go.
